The San Francisco 49ers open the 2010 season on Sunday by visiting the Seattle Seahawks in an opening season matchup that pits two teams on the rise.

That's not saying much for the Seahawks, who have been on a slide since being cheated out of a Super Bowl by the officials a few years back.

This year, though, shows some promise for them with a new coach and possibly the best 2010 draft of any team.

The 49ers are looking for a breakout year after a couple years in a row of broken promises. With a confident Alex Smith standing behind a revamped offensive line, the 49ers start the season as the favorites to win the NFC West.

QB Matt Hasselbeck is an aging veteran who came out of nowhere to lead his team to a Super Bowl appearance.

Last season Matt was knocked out of the first game between these divisional foes on a rush towards the goal line against 49ers star linebacker Patrick Willis.

Hasselbeck drove for the end zone, and Willis drove his shoulder through Matt's spine.

Hasselbeck left the game, and the 49ers won easily after that.

It is safe to say that Matt Hasselbeck is the player to watch in this game, and the Seahawks will go as far as Hasselbeck can take them.

49ers QB Alex Smith, on the other hand, has had a much different NFL experience. Coming out of college as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, Smith for the first time has an offensive coordinator who has stuck around for a second straight season.

While the 49ers can win the game without a great showing from Smith...this is his first game in a final make or break season for Alex Smith's career.

For the 49ers, this game will be won or lost based on the play of an inexperienced yet talented offensive line and the running ability of a couple of star veteran running backs. While it's been said that the season will be hinging on the overall performance of Alex Smith, this game will hinge on exploiting the Seahawks' short-yardage defense.

Frank Gore hasn't had an offensive line to run behind with this much talent ever. Nor has he had the backfield accompaniment of a Brian Westbrook, who can stretch the field East-West, run or pass, while Frank Gore is the best North-South runner in the game.

With newly drafted LG Mike Iupati opening holes in the middle or pulling out for off-tackle plays and sweeps, expect the sheer adrenaline of Iupati's first game in the league to be a factor in this athletic mauler blowing Seahawks off the line.

The other SF rookie set to make an impact is RT Anthony Davis. Don't expect too much from Davis this game though; the best thing he can do is keep it simple. He doesn't have the fire Iupati has and will have a longer learning curve, and an average performance from him will be a major victory.

Thus, expect Seattle to attack the right side of the 49ers line, where Davis and RG Chilo Rachal will need help.

That help will come from C David Bass, who is subbing in for an injured Eric Heitmann. Bass' versatility is showing him as an undervalued asset on the 49ers team.

Help will also come from blockers like Westbrook and Moran Norris out of the backfield and the best tight end group in football with Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, and blocking specialist Nate Byham.

Seattle will look to confuse this offensive line with blitz packages and will aim to test Alex Smith's ability to commandeer his troops by shifting protection at the line. The best thing Smith can do for his team is run a calm and organized offense so the younger players know their jobs and execute.

Keeping it simple will be the key for the Niners.

The Seattle Seahawks boast some young superstars on their team as well. One matchup pits the No. 6 overall pick and best OL in the draft, LT Russell Okung, versus veteran San Francisco DE Justin Smith.

Seattle's glory years left them when LG Steve Hutchinson left after the Super Bowl season. With the retirement of perennial All-Pro LT Walter Jones (another No. 6 overall pick), Okung represents a step in the direction of the dominant Seahawks offensive lines of the past.

Expect Okung to win this day over in the one-on-one battle with Justin Smith, although not by much. The 49ers have a bevy of blitzing linebackers, and the 3-4 defense may be too much for the young Okung to handle.

49ers fans take heed though: Russell Okung is a star in the making, and the second game between the teams this year will show a vastly improved Okung.

UPDATE: Russell Okung has been ruled out for Week 1...tough loss for the Seahawks.

The other future superstar for Seattle is S Earl Thomas out of Texas. This speedster and No. 14 overall pick for Seattle, along with second round WR Golden Tate, gave Seattle the best draft in terms of talent in 2010.

Thomas is going to be a game-breaker from Game 1 and can singlehandedly neutralize the 49ers' passing attack.

Thomas is why the 49ers will have to win this game in the trenches by running the ball.

There is one matchup, however, that is as intriguing as any in Week 1 across the NFL. That is the prospect of Earl Thomas being matched up one-on-one against the 49ers' star TE Vernon Davis.

Thomas can match Vernon's foot speed, but can Thomas get in good enough position to out-battle the physical Davis for a ball thrown deep down the middle of the field?

This, being the 49ers' favorite play for Vernon Davis, will be a play to watch for when it happens in this game.

Whether Davis is neutralized or can make this play can swing the tide of this game.

There are other players to watch for on both sides of the ball.

San Francisco's MLB, No. 52 Patrick Willis, is always a fun player to watch, and No. 15 WR Michael Crabtree will look to have a solid game to start off his sophomore season, although it won't be easy against veterans like CB Marcus Truant and S Lawyer Milloy back there.

If anyone is going to break any runs against the Niners, it will be Julius Jones...there's something about ex-Cowboys that can be a thorn in the Niners' side. Expect the Niners' MLBs of Willis and Takeo Spikes to be hungry for some big hits against Jones.
